This event will look at the history of equine cognition research and explore how scientists go about understanding animal minds. Some recent studies will be highlighted and we’ll look at how these findings could be applied to management, interaction and understanding of horses in particular and how these findings further our understanding of animal cognition in general.
Leanne Proops has an MSc in Animal Behaviour from Exeter University. Now in the final year of her PhD at the University of Sussex, she is studying horse social cognition within the Mammal Vocal Communication and Cognition Research Team (http://www.sussex.ac.uk/psychology/internal/people/peoplelists/person/13784). Her research focuses on the ability of horses to recognise social partners and the extent to which horses are able to understand human body language and communicative cues.
